Municipalities depend on the data collected in the US Census. Every year, the federal government distributes more than $400 billion to tribal, state and local governments based on census data. In addition to determining seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, census data helps guide local planning decisions, including where to provide additional social services, build new roads, hospitals and schools, and where to locate job-training centers. The data also helps to determine the need for grant programs essential to communities and inform a diverse range of local initiatives, from justifying the need for an after-school program to designating revitalization areas. Census Day is April 1, but census questionnaires will be delivered or mailed to over 130 million households in March. One of the shortest census forms in history, the 2010 Census form asks 10 questions and takes about 10 minutes to complete. Participation in the 2010 Census is easy, important and safe. Households should complete and mail back their forms upon receipt. Census workers will visit households that do not return forms to take a count in person. Help your community participate.
